Delighted to find out through crewman Tom Lane\'s log book the Halifax on the cover of author Ian Darling\'s new book "Amazing Airmen" is W7749 TL-F. Tom flew on W7749 TL-F for 16 trips to continental Europe starting on August 11/1942 with a trip to Le Havre and ending with a trip to Turin on December 9/1942. The "F" in the serial number explains why the plane was called "F" for Freddie. This Halifax was retired from operations and placed with 35/1659 BCU, which I believe was a training unit. It was "struck from charge" which I believe means no longer used as of August 6/1944. Very interesting to learn that the Halifax on the cover of "Amazing Airmen" W7749 TL-F actually survived several operations and was retired.

Hi, I have been trying to find any information about my GrandFathers service. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. His name is Wilfred Cott, he was stationed in England, he served as a tail gunner aboard a Lancaster bomber. He was injured as a result of a bullet fragment. His later service was a Lieutenant Air Gunnery/Navigations Instructor. He enlisted and was from Leamington, Ontario. If you have any information or photos, I would greatly appreciate contact. It is November 11 and a fitting time to visit your site again. My dad, Flying Officer Thomas Ellison (died Dec 1, 1999), was a lancaster pilot in the 405 Pathfinders aboard ND524 'G George'. He and his crew, Alan Charlie, Alex McFall, Bob Henderson, Fred Stevens, Roy Stowe, and Don McKinnon were fortunate to fly 54 sorties from 44-45 and make it home again. He is mentioned in the book "Reap the Whirlwind", praised by his crew as being a 'strict disciplinarion', which I can believe was true. We still have a painting of their plane G George and many photos and memorabilia from that era. I hope to make it to Nanton one day to sit in the lancaster to feel what it was like to be in that plane. What a thrill it would be to ride in a lanc or fighter. I remember as a young boy wearing his head gear with the long cord and mouthpiece. If there is anyone who knew this crew it would be great to hear from you. I was fortunate to get from a California man a copy of an article on the Griffon 65 engine showing photos and internal drawings. It is from a september 20, 1945 issue of Flight magazine. If anyone has any similar information or articles on these engines please contact me. I am thrilled with them and would like to see them back in production for racing etc. It is important to think of those who fought in the past, and those who are fighting in the present. I can only hope they all return safe and sound. Good luck to all those overseas. May you make it home soon.

I have, I hope, paid tribute to all the Second world War flyers from commonweath countries the US and beyond and as we remember them let us spare a thought for those still fighting to day for our freedoms liberty and contrary to the UK Government's 'current' belief Democracy! God bless them all and I will keep the Lancaster on my board till they are all safely home from Iraq and Afganistan If you click on the picture you will see my Dad's Squadron arriving in the US!

The 48th Highlanders of Canada Regimental Museum is attempting to put a face to all those members of the regiment that were KIA or DOW during World War 1 and World War II.
There was about 2000 soldiers that lost their lives and and the museum has about 100 photos. If any of your family members served in this unit and did not return home from the war the museum would be thankful in getting a photo of him for their archives.
Here is a link to a YouTube video showing some of those who were KIA.

To Liz Smith,
You obtain details from the 635 Squadron Pathfinders site, along with placing enquiries on the guestbook.
http://www.635squadron.com
Although there are many ORB's listed on the internet, to date, none for 635 Sqn.

Footnote - ORB's = Operational Record Books, which may lists crew members, operation name ( target) & details, bomb loads, actual inflight summary, etc.
In short, they can detail your family members operational log for his tour of operations. This of course varied from squadron to squadron, depending how well records were kept.

On Monday 3rd August 09, by chance I happened on your museum. What struck me is the pride you put upon the efforts of the men who fought for our freedom in WWII, and those who made it possible by building the aircraft that did it. I was especially touched by your memorial to those 10,000+ Canadians who died so many miles from home. I thank you for remembering them, they deserve it, and them I thank for my freedom. Keep working on the Lanc. She's a beaut. Lovely museum, if I'm ever back that way I will return. Well done!
